DIRNDL: THEN & NOW

‘Dirndl’ originates from the term ‘diernen’ of the women workers from Bavarian & Austrian farms in the 19th century. With its origin in laborious conditions, dirndl aprons were often made from spare bed sheets or other used cloth. But like in recent trends, city folk were drawn to the simplicity of these country fashions to introduce a “traditional” look into their closet.

With this, dirndl fashion spiraled into a more “festive” wear with puffed sleeves, metal & bead embellishments, various patterns, and bodices. If you plan on travelling to Germany for your next Oktoberfest, be sure to look into what your dirndl says about you! Different add-ons, colors, and lengths can send a message to those you meet.

LEDERHOSEN... WHO KNEW?

Lederhosen are often the number one piece of clothing that comes to mind when people think of Bavaria or Oktoberfest. However, there’s quite a bit to know about this leather pant.

Great for either hot or cold weather, these pants do have different points of functionality to appreciate. One of the most important aspects? How well they hold up against beer spills! Whether it’s the spills, the length, or the option of going commando, the Catholic church doesn’t look fondly upon this cultural fashion – to the point that they were deemed “immoral” by the archbishop of Munich in 1913!

BRING IT ALL TOGETHER

It’s your day to celebrate Oktoberfest. You’ve dawned your lederhosen/dirndl. You’ve bought the pants, shirts, apron, bodice… but something’s missing. That’s where the accessories come into play! No lederhosen or dirndl is complete without them. For dirndls, this can include jewelry like chokers, shawls, braided hair & ribbons, and frilled socks. For lederhosen, you may add hats, pins, and knee-high socks.
